KS3 English

Quote

Words are powerful; they shape how we think, feel, and understand the world.”

What do we learn

In KS3 English, students develop their core skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Pupils study a range of texts, including fiction, non‑fiction, poetry, and plays, while building vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and grammar knowledge. Lessons also focus on expressing ideas clearly and confidently.

Why do we learn it

English helps students communicate effectively, understand others, and make sense of the world around them. It supports emotional expression, confidence, and critical thinking, which are particularly important in a behavioural setting where communication and self‑regulation skills are key.

How do we assess it (Diff accreditations etc)

Assessment is ongoing and supportive. Students are assessed through:

  • Classwork and written tasks

  • Entry level qualification

  • Short reading and writing assessments

  • Speaking and listening activities

  • Teacher feedback and progress checks

Progress is measured against individual starting points.

How do we do? results

Success is celebrated through personal progress, improved confidence, and engagement. Achievements are recognised through praise, rewards, and positive feedback rather than just test scores.

Careers?

Strong English skills support all future pathways, including:

  • Further education and training

  • Apprenticeships
